Hi All,
I'm trying to generate some interest to do the ham radio annual Field Day event at MHO. I usually do it at Hazelwoods, some property that Hazel Park Schools owns near Mount Holly, but they are scaling back this year. Field Day is June 26 and 27. The object is to set up temporary stations, operate with non-commercial power (battery), make as many contacts with other hams around US/Canada doing the same thing. If I can convince a couple of other guys to operate at MHO, we may do it with solar charged batteries, using low power (known as "QRP") -- this will fit in well with the history of MHO. (Several of us enjoy operating with low power in a portable mode. We have worked all over the world with 5 watts or less of output power.)
Speaking of history, on June 19, the week before Field Day, I will set up a special event station to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first moving pictures of the surface of the sun taken at MHO. This is advertised in the June issue of QST, the American Radio Relay League magazine. Tom can't do this because of his Pedal Across Lower Michigan. Mike may be there. The object will be to talk with as many stations as we can, to spread the word about MHO, and to send those we contact a nice certificate which I designed and Mike will print.

Hi Dave:
I have someone who is interested in the "solar power" aspect of your efforts as well as the HAM Radio elements. He wants to offer this as a learning opportunity for some of the youth he is working with. His name is David Allen and he has worked with the observatory previously with youth outreach programs. He is going to be at the observatory on Sunday. If you are planning on being here I think it would be a good opportuntiy to meet him and see if the things he is proposing work within the program you are developing.
Hope all finds you well.
Best,
Jim
